Hands Holding Each Other
Hands Holding Hands

Heather Cannon, MSW, LCSW

“Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing we’ll ever do.”  Brene Brown.

Are you BRAVE enough to “own your story?”
Allowing someone whom you don’t know (at first) to hear your story and partner with you to create
change is BRAVE! Therapy requires courage because it takes you out of your comfort zone. However, it
is a powerful first step towards healing, growth, and emotional stability that will lead to living a more
fulfilled life.  As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 10 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults, I have developed a strength-based and solution-focused approach to counseling. Additionally, I incorporate a variety of methodologies and techniques into counseling sessions since no two clients present the same. That said, I do hold two core beliefs that I feel define my practice. The first is that “what really works in therapy is a real person connecting to a real person” (Mary Pipher). It is through this safe and trusting connection that transformation is made possible. The second is that coaching clients to build resiliency skills which include self-awareness, mental agility, connection, optimism, identification of character strengths, and self regulation is key to not only overcoming life’s challenges, but using them for your ultimate good. My goal as your therapist is to compassionately listen to your story, provide support, and offer practical feedback that will help you to optimize your life experience. Learning to thrive rather than merely survive the challenges that bring you to therapy will require commitment on your part. If you are ready to obtain greater self-knowledge and personal growth, I would be honored to help you reach your goals!
Below are some additional details about me that may be helpful for you to know. Thank you!

EXPERIENCE:
In addition to seeing clients privately, I am currently employed full-time as a crisis counselor at Bloomfield High School. Prior to working in Bloomfield, I spent 5 years serving special education students as a district social worker on a child study team in Morris County. I also have experience working in the community setting for various non-profit agencies serving children and families impacted by child abuse and neglect.

My credentials include a Masters in Social Work with a concentration in children and families, and a certification in Violence Against Women and Children from Rutgers University. I have also obtained a School Social Worker Certification from the New Jersey State Department of Education, and an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) approved by the New Jersey State Board of Social Work Examiners.
